There is a recent article drawing a picture of sedevacantism in our times in relation to our Lord and his expression to Caiaphas and St. Peter. [Excerpt:] "Thus we see that bad clergymen are indeed permitted by God. To decide that we cannot have a bad pope has no precedence in Church history. We know that Our Lord never took away the Priestly Office or Authority of Caiaphas, the High Priest at the time of Our Lord's Crucifixion. Caiaphas' behavior and speech was most certainly blasphemous and heretical. Yet Our Lord never uttered one word that stripped him of that office. The same for the very first Pope. St. Peter denied Our Lord three times, in truth, a mortal offense, not to mention the scandal it created. But recall that Our Lord knew Peter would fall. He prophesied that denial. Yet Christ did not take away Peter's Office of Pope. Rather, Our Lord Jesus Christ told St. Peter, “But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren.” (Luke 22:32). We see thus that Christ states that St. Peter will fall into sin and error. But again, Our Lord Jesus Christ does not take away St. Peter's office of Pope. But instead states, “I have prayed for thee”. Does this not tell us what we must do the same with our fallen Popes? We pray for them and for the Church." God is Wise. Humans are fickle. Holy Scripture shares itself rich in meaning and full of life for all generations far surpassing our understanding and capacity to learn. St. Thomas Aquinas also stopped his [great] work of the Summa Theologiae unfinished after having received a divine revelation. "On the feast of St. Nicholas (in 1273), Aquinas was celebrating Mass when he received a revelation that so affected him that he wrote and dictated no more, leaving his great work the Summa Theologiae unfinished. To Brother Reginald’s (his secretary and friend) expostulations he replied, "The end of my labors has come. All that I have written appears to be as so much straw after the things that have been revealed to me." So how can we understand God and his ways guiding his Church in each period of time? We can't! The mystery of Calvary still express itself in our time beautifully through the lives of the saints feeding the Church and is Bread of contemplation to the Angels for all eternity; "Blessed be the Lamb of God...Hosanna in the Highest". Still more, we know that the Pontiff Caiaphas was the High Priest of that time who was certainly crude, worldly, and evil against the Convent and Laws of God. He pushed God's people to sin and apostate. He was so bad, he murdered God! A deicide no other human, no other Authority, no other pontiff had ever done before in creation. Caiaphas' sin was a far worst sin than Judas who only betrayed Christ. Caiaphas was the one who had directly killed Christ. Not even Lucifer had committed such a sin. Yet, Christ did not remove Caiaphas nor divest him from his Authority over the Temple and the Law set as absolute in God's guidance over his people. The Chair of the Pontiff is greater than the person; it is the visible throne of God to his people. Yes, we know there are bad prelates and other popes explained well by St. John Eudes in his book ‘The Priest: His Dignity and Obligations’: Bad priests are a sign of God’s anger... (quoted in that above article). Quoted too, are some writings giving the mind of the Church that She can never remove the visible Authority of God over his people. Being so, there is also another major element here and need for human redemption that must extend itself to all time and generations, that is, the providing of Christ and his Glory through strife and calamity within His Church proving He is the Head and mover of Grace to human salvation. Thus, there always needs to be a High priest in body, to the Head, to make sacrifice placing Himself -the Lamb of God- on the Altar; our Lord commanded this. So in two parts of understanding, a visible Pontiff, the High priest, must always remain in time and needs to confer this generation of sacrifice to other priests for all people's redemption present and future generations to come; which an eclipse or sedevacantism cannot fulfill; and second, there needs a visible Pontiff, a High priest, to lead and "kill Christ" again in the second coming; meaning, it has been prophesied in Scripture and in Fatima, La Salette..., for the persecution of the Bride of Christ, that the Pontiff, the High priest, will persecute the Church in the footsteps of Her Spouse suffering Her way of the Cross to bleed through a passion (a white or red martyrdom) causing a disfigurement to Her Holiness and crucifixion to Her members in oblation to God as the Lamb. "Follow me", says our Lord. So a visible Pontiff, in the hands of a High priest, must make that betrayal and offering of Christ again in the Church [like Caiaphas], and for the Church, to fulfill the Revelation in the Gospels. A true continuity of Pontifical reign can only do this. There must be a Pontiff, a High Priest, to offer this sacrifice of the Church. A sedevacante in history is foolish like the mocking crowds telling Christ to come off the cross; remove yourself from your redemption and visible throne! Sedevacantism removes the High priest to offer the sacrifice of the Church.
